I think we are all involved in Social Media, even if our income is not derived from it. We all tweet, blog, etc, and so we are all affected by douchebags who try and "game" the system in some way. Whilst we are not bought into disrepute it does affect us. As for other douchebags, I'm affected every day by the arrogance of some key layers in the web world. The way they choose to create software and frameworks I use directly affects me, and gives some of the technologies I work with a bad name...

Do you think one of the things that COULD differentiate genuine social media consultants from douchebags is putting work into finding tools to report clearly on data and then analyse and discuss it honestly? Perhaps saying, "Well that didn't work, lets try the next idea?"

I think it's difficult because when douche bags talk about huge, viral campaigns to companies, if this doesn't happen instantly, the company sees "social media" as a failure. What they really need to understand is the most fulfilling use is a slow building up of faithful followers.

You know all this already and I'm probably rambling on like a fool. I feel like I GET the concepts behind social media too, I want to figure out SOME way of moving forwards, learning more concrete skills. Very overwhelming at the moment. But often you just have to jump in and try!

I totally agree. But don't you also agree that anyone who's somehow invested in what's now now called Social Media is more likely to be annoyed by these douchebags. And yes we can try to take on all the douchebags in the world, but I think for now we are more motivated to take on this special flavor of douchebags called the Social Media Douchebags.
